School Holidays 22 September - 10 October
We are only a few weeks away from presenting our School Musical “SUPERKIDS”. We have been posting little snippets of rehearsals on Facebook with some of the songs you might hear during the show. You also should have received a note letting you know what costume your child needs for their performance. There will be a BBQ from 5.30-6.45pm before the performance at 7pm if you need to grab a quick snack before the show begins. Performances are Thursday 15th September and Friday 16th September at 7pm. It will be great fun!
Classes in 2023
I have received correspondence from the Catholic Education office who have agreed that the school should move from 12 classes to 13 classes in 2023. This is very exciting and we are almost there to have a 2 stream school. In 2023 we will have two Kindergarten, Year One, Year Two, Year Three & Year 4 classrooms, and 3 Year 5/6 classes. It is very exciting to see the school grow in size. At present I am in discussions with staff for next year and because of various reasons there will be a few staff changes in 2023.
Walkathon
Thanks to all who contributed to make the Walkathon such a great success. We raised over $13,000 and this money will be used to finish off our upgrade of the hall and replacing the shade sail & building a new structure over the existing senior equipment.
FOOD FOR THOUGHT by Judith Locke
Making it instantly better for your child might be the worst thing to do. Help them through trickiness rather than remove it every time
So, your child comes home from school, upset that they didn’t get on the team. Or missed out on a Principals’ award. Or didn’t get in the camp group with their best friend. There they are standing in front of you crying or visibly upset and it’s breaking your heart. What do you do?Like most parents, it will be extremely upsetting to see your child disappointed. That’s likely to make you want to make them feel better by changing the outcome. You might call the school and try to encourage them to alter their decision or even demand it.Some parents might go a little lower key and work very quickly to make their child feel better — buying them a sweet treat, praising them immediately by placing some doubt on the validity of the decision, or letting their child have the day off school the next day. Some parents might be so uncomfortable about their child feeling this emotion that they might try to remove the feeling, by denying it. These parents might tell their child they shouldn’t be so upset, to make them move on quickly.
All these actions are perfectly understandable as a caring response from a loving parent who is trying to do what they see is the best for their child.Psychologists believe that some parents are more prone to these types of actions because of their ‘meta-emotion’, a term by John Gottman to describe feelings about feelings. It’s of interest because it indicates what parents will do when their child faces occasional anger or sadness. If their child’s tricky feelings make parents feel terrible, then they are likely to do everything in their power to make it go away — very quickly. But it is not always the best action. Indeed, if it is done every time, your child gets upset then you risk them never learning how to cope with tricky feelings or events. That’s because you take away all difficulty and they never learn how to deal with challenge. When they are adults, that might make them more likely to take out the credit card when feeling a little melancholy, head to the donut store when bored, or lash out when they feel unsure of what is coming next in a situation. If you always deny them the chance to feel those emotions, then they are less likely to be able to pinpoint what is bothering them and learn how to overcome or cope with it.
So, what is the better way to deal with their tricky feelings?Gottman came up with a technique called Emotion Coaching. This is a method where parents put effort into noticing their children’s feelings. If they see children upset worried or sad, rather than immediately taking away those tricky reactions, they should name the feeling, validate their right to feel that way and possibly normalise their responses to a tricky or frustrating event. It is important to be neutral in this and not to show your child that their feelings make you uncomfortable. This is going to eventually make them feel better, because they will understand their physical reactions, feel understood, and take comfort in the fact that it is a normal response.
I know that’s not going to take away the feeling — but remember you are in this for their long term good. Teaching them to cope is going to make them better equipped to manage situations — this time and the next time as life invariably presents its ups and downs to your child. That’s going to make you feel a lot better about their future.
Takeaway for parents -Something disappointing happened at school? Here’s what to do.
- Note the way they are behaving and remember not all sadness comes across that way. They might show anger or be nonchalant.
- Talk about the ways they might be feeling by naming the emotion and validating their right to feel disappointment or upset because of what happened.
- Show no discomfort in the fact that they feel that way and avoid telling them that their feelings make you feel a certain way. In this, you given them permission to feel without worrying about its impact on you.
· Support them. Show love through presence rather than presents in this moment. That will help them through it rather than bypass it completely.

We are busily preparing for our long-awaited school play, Superkids! The Musical!
All student's will have brought home information about their costume requirements, but please see the PDF below for your child's costume requirement. Mr Angus will inform families in the coming days which night they will need to perform. Please direct any questions that your children are unable to answer to the office.
We will also be holding a pre-performace BBQ each evening, so please come with cash and enjoy a sausage sizzle before the show. We appreciate the continued support of our school community, and encourage all families to bring their grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends to enjoy the evening.
We can't wait for opening night! And remember, it's bad luck to say "good luck" to an actor, tell them to "Break a leg" instead!
Last week, with the help of Gerard Tang and Mrs Harris, year 5/6 students from 5/6A and 5/6J run a Forgiveness Reflection day for year 1. The students played a number of ice breaker games and then did some work on forgiveness before closing off the day with a prayer and discussion about ways we can forgive our family, friends and peers.
Thank you to our Youth Ministry team for all their prep and we look forward to year 2's turn next week and 5/6M working on their Youth Ministry work next term.

Please continue to keep our confirmation students in your thoughts as they continue their preparations to make confirmation on the 17th and 18th of September.

3/4H Book Week at SDN Lady McKell
Last week as part of SDN Lady McKell's book week celebrations, 3/4H attended the center to share some of our favourite stories and spend some time with the preschool children. It's safe to say the 3/4 children LOVED the day, not wanting to come back and continue reading, drawing and playing with the preschoolers. We look forward to welcoming many of the Lady McKell children here next year.
Canteen Procedures & IOU Information
We have been getting a large amount of forgotten lunches and unpaid IOUs. This is a huge strain on the canteen manually and financially. Below are a few procedures put in place to keep the canteen running smoothly and effectively.
- How to Order – place order on the Qkr app or write order on a paper bag with cash inside.
- QKR! Orders – are due by 9.30am on the day (from Term 4 this will change to 9am cut-off). Please remember that you can order the night or days before. Also check that you have selected the correct day.
- Cancelled QKR! Orders - if you have placed an order and your child is not at school that day, you can cancel your order by going into “activities” and click on the minus icon before 9.30am. If you need to cancel the order after 9.30a m you need to call the office or text Di on 0417 688 472 ASAP. If the order has already been prepared or made you may not receive a credit.
- No Lunch – if your child realises that they don’t have lunch before 10.00am a phone call will be made to parents. If lunch cannot be brought up to school, then the canteen can make lunch and an IOU will be sent home. If they realise after 10.00am a phone call will be made but only a sandwich can be made from the canteen no hot food.
- Unpaid IOUs – please remember to pay your IOUs ASAP, either on Qkr or cash. Please check your child's school bag for these.
Please note that from the start of Term 4 the canteen orders on Qkr will cut off at 9am. PLEASE ensure that you place your child's lunch order prior to this time.
PLEASE NOTE THAT THERE IS A $5 LIMIT FOR OVER THE COUNTER PURCHASES AT THE CANTEEN.
As the days get colder, please ensure your children have the correct winter uniform to wear. This includes the school jumper, jacket, beanie and scarf, and remember black tights for the girls.
There are good quality pre-loved items at huge discounts available directly from the Uniform shop to cater for all budgets.
- New uniform purchases can be ordered on Qkr. The order will be filled on Tuesdays and sent home with your child.
- If you are wanting to purchase some 2nd hand uniforms please visit the uniform shop during the opening hours.
- Students must wear Summer Uniform in Terms 1 & 4 and Winter Uniform in Terms 2 & 3.
Parent attendance at school activities - This term because of the rising number of COVID-19 cases we have been asked by Catholic Education Head Office to limit parents/visitors at school, mainly for indoor events. Because of this directive we will not be able to have parents and carers at assemblies, masses, etc until further notice. We sincerely apologise for this turn in events and hope to be able to welcome you back soon.
Staying home when sick and hygiene requirements - Students and visitors must not attend school if they are unwell and will be sent home if they any have symptoms of COVID-19. All staff, visitors and students should at all times maintain appropriate hand and respiratory hygiene.
Household Contacts – Students are required to follow NSW Health directions when they are deemed a household close contact and must notify the school to advise they are a household contact. It is strongly recommended that a household contact works or studies from home where it is practical to do so. A household contact must wear a face mask in any indoor setting that is not their own home, if they are aged 12 years and over. Mask wearing for students in primary schools is at the discretion of the student and their families, and is not recommended for children in Kindergarten to Year 2. Where a student attends school they must undertake a COVID test prior to returning to school and may only attend school if they have no symptoms.
Communication - We will communicate to the school communities when a significant number of cases are recorded. Staff and students who are affected should comply with the appropriate public health advice, dependent on their exposure level. Staff and students who are not directly affected can continue attending school unless they have symptoms of COVID-19.
We have a new digital parent and visitor sign in portal installed in the front office. It is very simple to use and helps the office staff greatly.
Staff will be on hand to assist you when you are first using the system. Please remember to come to the front office and sign your child/ren in if they arrive to school after 9.20am, and sign out if you are picking them up before 3.20pm.
A reminder that students should not bring toys and personal or valuable items to school in case of loss or damage.
PLEASE REMEMBER YOUR FAMILY NAME SIGN WHEN PICKING UP FROM CAR LINE
CAR LINE PARKING RULES
A reminder to all families of the parking rules at car line. Remember, when you are lined up on the road at pick up time you are only permitted to be stopped for 2 minutes. If the line is not moving, advice from NSW Police is that parents and carers should drive around the block until they are able to enter the school grounds.
Please also remember that student supervision at car line is until 3:45pm, so arriving around or after 3:30 will help to ease the congestion at this time. It is not essential that you are at car line before 3:20pm (school finish time).
Please also remember to leave neighbours driveways clear when waiting to pick your child up at the end of the day, especially if you are waiting behind the bus stop area.
