Year 1 Koala Facts

This Term, Year 1 have been learning all about Koalas and the challenges that they face. To raise awareness about koalas we researched some interesting facts that we would like to share. 

  • Koalas are endangered because of bushfires (Charlie S). 
  • Koalas sometimes look like wombats just different colours (Isla).
  • Koalas eat gum leaves (Molly, Parker H, Nixon & Heath). 
  • Koalas are nocturnal (Hephzibah & Hudson). 
  • Koalas can live for 10-15 years (Nolan & Aoife). 
  • Koalas are the size of a jelly bean when they are born (Addison, Charlie B, Phoebe, Rebecca, Rhythm, Rory & Charlotte).
  • Baby koalas are called joeys (Daniel, Darcie & Aahana). 
  • Koalas sleep for 18-20 hours a day (Sophie, Oliver & Olivia). 
  • Wombats are koala’s relatives (Koda). 
  • The word koala is an Aboriginal word meaning ‘no drink’ (David & Tobias).
  • Baby koalas stay in their mothers pouch for 6 months (Ruby, Lincoln). 
  • Koalas spend most of their time sleeping (Luna).
  • Koalas are a special kind of mammal called a marsupial (Anastasia). 
  • Koalas have two thumbs for extra grip (Isabella),
  • Koalas carry their babies on their backs (Jayde). 
  • Koalas are marsupials (Neave).
  • Koalas get most of their water from gum leaves (Luca).
  • When joeys are born they have no fur and their ears and eyes are closed (Lily).
  • Koalas can eat 200 grams of leaves each day (Duke).
  • Koalas are on track to go extinct by 2050 (Sidney).
  • Koalas live in gum trees (Gabriella).
  • Some koalas died in the 2020 bushfires and some were saved by firefighters who gave them water (Halle).
  • Koalas are not actually bears (Felix).
  • Koalas are the only species that eat gum leaves because they are poisonous to other animals (Mason).
  • Koalas live up in trees to keep safe from predators (Parker M).
  • Thousands of koalas died during the 2020 bushfires (Isabelle).

We’re looking forward to our casual clothes fundraiser coming up on Monday 21st of August. We hope to adopt a koala through the Port Macquarie Koala Hospital so that they can continue to provide vital care and conservation of wild koalas. Thank you for your support with this important initiative.
