5/6A Class of the Week!

During Science this term, 5/6A have been learning about animal adaptations.
Last week we integrated Maths and Science to explore whether blubber helped Arctic animals regulate their body temperatures.
Students hypothesised if the use of fat (Copha) smeared over their hands would increase their time tolerance in ice-cold water. Initially, students predicted time-tolerance using their bare hands in ice-cold water. Some students found that their tolerance was 30 seconds, while others pushed on to reach over 10 minutes!
Next, students lathered their hands in Copha then applied a glove to hold the fat against their skin. Most students reported a significant increase in their time-tolerance in the ice-cold water. Those who did not see an increase in their tolerance realised that their Copha may have been applied a little too thin!
5/6A were very proud of their achievements and their ability to prove or dismiss their predictions.
