A Student's Prayer for a New School Year
Lord Jesus, I ask for Your help as I begin this new school year.
Allow me to experience Your presence in the many blessings You put before me.
Open my eyes to the new challenges and exciting opportunities that this new school year brings.
Open my heart and mind to new friends and new teachers.
Give me a generous spirit to be enthusiastic with my studies and courage to accept new opportunities.
Help me to be attentive to my teachers and let me experience Your presence in my new friends.
Jesus, inspire me to do my best this year! Amen

I always look forward to the first day of term to see the bright, shiny faces to start my day and students looking neat as a pin in their new uniform. Students here are keen to learn more and reunite with their friends. A very warm welcome to all the new families starting at Ss Peter and Paul’s this year. If you see a new face in the playground I urge you to go up and say hello and introduce yourself. Families new to town love to find out how the school works and what’s available here in Goulburn.
A special welcome to the new staff members – Mr Garreth Wigg- Acting Assistant Principal, Ms Tracey Jenkins-5/6J , Mr Davis Collinge-4C, Miss Rowena Atkinson -5/6 A and Mrs Kara Schilt our new Office helper and Learning Support Assistant.
Our school calendar is on our app & school website. It is important to check the School App in case there are changes to the calendar.
Our school year for staff began on Tuesday with a very special Mass at Our Lady of Fatima with the other staff’s in the Goulburn Mission-Trinity Catholic College, St Joseph’s- North Goulburn and St Mary’s, Crookwell.
We are opening the school year with a special combined Mass at the Cathedral with the 3 Catholic Schools in Goulburn on Friday 10am in the Cathedral. We have so many students involved we are sorry that seating for families will be very limited. Our Years 3-6 students will be attending. At this Mass our school leader’s badges will be blessed. In the afternoon we will be having an Induction ceremony for our school leaders as part of our Friday Assembly. This begins at 2.45pm. All are welcome to attend.
Our playgroup begins again next Tuesday. Children are welcome from 0-5 years old and do not need to have siblings in our school. Playgroup begins at 9.30am-11.30am. You are always welcome in the room for a cuppa before it begins.
All families we need you to complete the LOCAL Excursion Form ASAP. This covers student’s attendance and travel to any event during the school year in the Goulburn area. Staff take these forms with them to all events they attend. It is important to let the office know if any of your contact or medical details change.
This year instead of having Grade Nights we will be having a Welcome BBQ on Tuesday 11th of February from 5-7pm and a chance to visit the classrooms and meet the teachers. There will also be a meeting at 6.30pm for all Kindergarten parents in their classroom. Anyone who can help with the BBQ will be appreciated.
Finally a school community works best when we communicate openly and honestly. Please feel free to ask questions and offer feedback. I encourage also finding a way to contribute to the school by helping in classrooms, covering books, helping at sporting events, joining the P&F & helping in the uniform shop. The list goes on and every offer of help is appreciated.
Miss Kathy Neely

Mercy Value Week 2-5
Our target value in Weeks 2-5 is Dignity (Respect). Show respect to everyone – we are all made in the image of God. We will focus on Respecting the rules of your family, school and society.
The start of the school year is an ideal time to reflect on our three school rues (Be Safe, Be Respectful, Be Responsible) and how this guides our daily behaviour and attitude in the classroom and on the playground.
Values Certificate
Each fortnight, teachers will be looking for examples of students demonstrating the target value. When this is demonstrated, the student’s name and class is written on the back of a merit mark. The student then places the merit mark in their House values box at the front office. Each fortnight, at a Friday assembly, a merit mark is drawn from the values box and the winner takes home a special certificate. A values certificate with the student’s photo is then displayed in the foyer area of the office.
Current Safety Matters
I am conscious that there are a number of health and safety issues which may be concerning you at this time. I hope the following information will assist you in understanding how our school is responding to these.
Novel Coronavirus
You will be aware that there have now been a small number of confirmed cases of the Novel Coronavirus within Australia. CECG has reviewed advice from Australian Government departments and agencies to coordinate our response. CECG will apply the same response as the NSW Government Departments of Health and Education for all of our schools in ACT and NSW.
Children who have visited China in the past two weeks must not attend school or childcare services until 14 days have lapsed from their date of departure from China.
Children with a confirmed case of Novel Coronavirus, will be excluded from school or childcare services until they are medically cleared to return.
If your child has been informed by government health authorities that they have been in close contact with a confirmed case of the Novel Coronavirus, irrespective of whether the child has developed symptoms, they must not attend their school or early childhood centre until the government informs you that it is safe for them to do so.
If your child has recently travelled to mainland China and develops symptoms, you should contact your primary care provider. Your primary care provider will liaise with relevant government authorities and determine whether or not your child needs to be excluded from their school or early childhood centre.
If you have spent time in Hong Kong, the above advice applies. However, if you have simply transited through Hong Kong airport, it does not apply.
The information below from the NSW Department of Health gives details the guidelines for exclusion from school and early childhood centres and outlines symptoms.
https://www.health.nsw.gov.au/news/Pages/20200128_05.aspx
https://education.nsw.gov.au/news/latest-news/advice-for-schools-regarding-novel-coronavirus
This advice must be followed. Parents and carers need to inform the school if their child has travelled to China or been in contact with someone who has a confirmed case of the virus.
Bushfires
Bushfires have had a direct impact on a number of schools in recent months. Fires continue to burn and may pose an ongoing threat. There is also the very real danger of new fires starting while the weather conditions remain hot and dry. There may be a need in some cases to close schools in order to ensure the safety of students and staff. Decisions about whether schools should be closed on a particular day are made in collaboration with Emergency Services agencies. Considerations include such factors as the proximity to existing fires and the relevant fire danger ratings for a given day. If a decision is taken to close the school, we will communicate advice to you as soon as possible.
Aside from those schools directly affected by bushfires, many schools have experienced extended periods of poor air quality due to smoke, which has often have come from fires far from where the schools are located. Air quality ratings issued by Government agencies are not accompanied by specific advice for schools. Given the variability of air quality through the course of a day and as different locations may experience different air quality, I have been advised that each school should individually, regularly assess the air quality based on observations and make appropriate decisions. This may include the following precautions:
Avoiding strenuous outdoor activity
Minimising outdoor activity by students whilst at school
Taking appropriate preventative precautions for students considered to be at high risk
Keeping windows closed and utilising air conditioning systems. Evaporative coolers should not be used where smoke is present as these tend to draw unfiltered air from outside.
I would encourage you to access these resources for further information:
Should you have any concerns for your child’s safety on a given day, you are welcome to have them remain at home.
As always, please contact Miss Neely with any question or concerns
