LET CHILDREN PLAY
Last week I attended the NSW Catholic School’s Principal Conference in Sydney. The speaker I was most interested in was Pasi Salhberg who now works for the Gonski Education Centre and is here to give advice to the NSW Department of Education. He is one of the world’s leading researchers in Education and set policy for Finland which is acknowledged as having one of the best performing education systems in the world. His new research is about the importance of ‘play’ for children.
His research states that: In the United States; only 13 states have laws that mandate recess time during the school day, and 8 have recommendations for physical activity in schools.
England: “Nurseries not preparing children for school”, says Ofsted.
Mexico: Many parents don’t want to pay for the time their children play or sleep in Early Childhood Centres.
Australia: "The word 'play' has become problematic in Australian schools.”
In Australia we are trying to make preschools more about literacy and numeracy skills and less about play.
A majority of parents (88%) believe that children are under pressure to grow up too quickly. Fewer parents are playing outdoors with their children.
Parenting paradigms are shifting to overprotecting children from risk-taking. Parents believe that their children will benefit more from structured activities as opposed to unstructured free play.
Coupled with less play is the rise of screen time. Research is showing that this is a real danger- More hours of screen time are associated with lower well-being in ages 2 to 17. - Twenge and Campbell, 2018
High users show less curiosity, self-control, and emotional stability. - Twenge and Campbell, 2018
There is directional association between screen time and poor performance on development screening tests among very young children. - Madigan, Browne, Racine, Mori, & Tough, 2019
Play is important and develops lifelong skills of communication, negotiation, cooperation, sharing, and problem-solving.
So the challenge to us as educators is how do we create more play in school and convince policy makers of its importance. Pasi Salberg suggested adding more hours of homework in a week –not more literacy and numeracy but time for unstructured play and sleep. Children should be having 9-10 hours a night and you need an hour of no screens to properly allow your brain and body to get ready for sleep.
Interesting food for thought to improve education in Australia –More play, less screens and more sleep- and none of these cost us a cent.
FIRST HOLY COMMUNION (EUCHARIST)
Students will continue Preparation classes on Monday 3rd June at St Brigid’s. Candidates are expected to also attend either the Saturday 5pm or Sunday 10am Mass at Ss’ Peter & Paul Cathedral. Students will receive the Sacrament of First Eucharist on Saturday 22nd June at 5pm or Sunday 23rd June at 10am. Please keep these students in your prayers.
STAGE 2 MASS
Students in Stage 2 will participate in a Mass in the school Chapel on Tuesday 4th June at 10.00am. Parents and carers are welcome to attend.
THE FEAST OF PENTECOST
The Easter mystery is the passion, death, Resurrection of Jesus and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. As such, the Feast of Pentecost (Pentecost Sunday) concludes the Easter Season. Pentecost is the promise of Jesus fulfilled. Through the Pentecost experience we see that the coming of the Holy Spirit inspires and strengthens the disciples to embody the mission of Jesus. The strength of the Holy Spirit creates the enthusiasm and wisdom to live as Jesus did. Just like the disciples, we too need the strength of the Holy Spirit. When reflecting on our life, we can see that in the face of new and uncertain challenges, we too can be ‘paralysed’ if we allow ourselves to be consumed by fear and apprehension. The presence of the Spirit helps us to be people of love and service, bringing the hope-filled message of Jesus into our world.
In the actions of people who are close to us, and the work of the Catholic Church through organisations like the Society of St Vincent de Paul and Caritas, we can see the work of the Holy Spirit. This encourages us to identify our gifts and see how we can contribute to our community – as a community that tries to follow the actions of Jesus.
The school community will be celebrating the Feast of Pentecost with a whole school Liturgy on Tuesday 11th June in the school hall at 10am. Parents and carers are invited to attend.
Marriage & Family Sunday Mass will be celebrated at the regular 11am Mass at St Christopher’s Cathedral in Manuka next Sunday 2nd June and will include a Renewal of Marriage Vows for all who wish to participate. No need to register. Just turn up an join in.

SPPFC
We have been very lucky with weather over the past few weekends and our season is well underway.
Last week throughout Australia, it was National Volunteers Week and it is very important to our club that we acknowledge all the hard work that goes on to make our small club great.
We would like to publicly thank all the coaches and managers of our teams – the training sessions, the games and all the other fun things that comes with coaching and managing a team. Thank you for everything that you do.
We would also like to thank Ronnie Ferris and Mrs Kain for the work they have done in making the start of the season so easy!
The School Community Council met recently. As at every meeting the state of enrolments are discussed. We talked about the success of our recent Open Day. Our school leaders took about 10 families on a tour of the school and we received good feedback. Our Kinder readiness program is having good attendance. The school budget was looked at to see how we are tracking. We appreciate all people paying their fees on time. Our budget looks to be sound at this stage of the year. We also looked at the Community Council finances which are largely supported by the Uniform Shop, Canteen and other fundraisers. The school is grateful to the Council for paying half of the cost of the new fence in the carpark. The canteen runs on a tight margin to support our manager and keep prices low. Please continue your support of this service. The Council is always looking for new members so if you are interested please let the office know.
1/2B had a wonderful visit from Mrs Harris two weeks ago. She came to teach a Stem Lesson using the game “Code and Go Robot Mouse.”
The children were using their coding skills to move the mouse to get the cheese. We all thoroughly enjoyed this challenging activity.
Tummy Warmers will be starting on Tuesday 11th June, and running on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings 8:30-9:00am.
Thank you to our helpers for making this possible.
School Photo's will be held on Tuesday 25th June, orders for photos can be done online using the online code PKM AYC 9XL, or use the envelope that has been sent home.
If you wish for your children to have a sibling photo please collect a sibling envelope from the office.
Mercy Values
Congratulations to Elsie Martin our Values Certificate recipient for Resilience (Always be your best and do your best) in Week 3.
A very BIG thank you to Angella Storrier Real Estate for their kind donation. Your support for our school is greatly appreciated!
Our school Trivia Night will be held on Friday the 23rd August at the Goulburn Workers Club, 4 rounds of trivia then dancing and karaoke.
Start getting your tables of 10 ready.
Tickets will go on sale first week, Term 3.
We will be having a wine raffle so we are looking for donations of wine or champange for this, if you are able to donate please bring bottles into the office.
