Don't forget, the first school disco for 2021 is on tomorrow Friday 26 February from 5:30-7pm in the school hall. During this time we will also have a working bee to tidy up around the school grounds.
LENT
This week we are in the second week of the season of Lent. For those less familiar with our Catholic traditions this is a period of 40 days before Easter when we are called to think about relationship with God and take up an act of penance to help us think about this. This usually involves giving up something. My challenge to students is that as well as “giving up” something, we could try and “take up” something. Perhaps some radical form of kindness or deliberately going above and beyond in service to each other. In the Gospel the apostles asked Jesus “Where do you live?”. Jesus replied, “Come and see!” Lent is about seeing where Jesus lives in our lives. Is He at the centre or pushed aside for other priorities? I think each time you do something for others you put Jesus in the centre of your life. As we begin our Lenten journey let us take time to “come and see”, and allow Jesus to come close to us and our families.
COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT
2021 already has a different feel to it. While we still know COVID is a danger we are gaining more freedoms. It especially nice to have parents back at some school events. We had a lovely evening for our "Welcome BBQ" and it was wonderful to have parents at the 3/4Y assembly. We are looking forward to a great crowd for our disco and working bee this Friday 26th February. We still need to follow COVID safe rules so this means limiting how many adults are in the hall during the disco.
I urge you to support two of our major P&F fundraisers that are happening this term- the Pie Drive and our Trivia Night. You can find the details on our app or in newsletters. The funds raised from both events will be used to upgrade our school sound system and projector. This will help especially with the School Musical coming up in Term 3.
I would like to say a special thank you to parents for their ongoing support of our school. We have increased enrolments coming to the school and when interviewing these people many mentioned the positive words they had been spoken to them by current parents. "Word of Mouth" is an important advertisement.
CANTEEN
Thank you for your understanding about closing the canteen earlier this week. Mrs Bennett does a wonderful job in running this important service and the School Community Council (which oversees the running of the canteen) appreciates her efforts and the other volunteers.
UNIFORM SHOP
Another area that has been extremely busy because of extra enrolments is our Uniform Shop. Thanks to our two parent volunteers Mrs Ford and Mrs Dillon. We would also be lost without Mrs Kain looking after orders and finances. We are always looking for new helpers. Please contact the office if you might be able to help.
School Community Council Meeting Summary
The School Community Council met for the first time in 2021 last Thursday. We have had some interest in people joining the council which is greatly appreciated.
Items discussed at the council were: Canteen & Uniform Shop finances, maintenance issues such as the canteen roof & guttering repairs and the upcoming Working Bee, enrolment growth, the School Registration visit, the Parish Sacramental programme and other future plans for the school (including finishing the refurbishment of the Chapel and Music Room and forward planning to upgrade the Kindergarten classrooms, Administration areas and the area outside Kindergarten). This will mean applying for a Government Building Grant to do this work. Increasing enrolments are an important point to help secure funding.
Last week, we celebrated Shrove Tuesday in our school hall and welcomed the Season of Lent with Ash Wednesday Mass at the Cathedral. A huge thank you to our Mini-Vinnies who lived out two of our Mercy Values by providing Service to their school community with Excellence.
As an adult, Lent offers us a time to reflect on our lives and work to strengthen our relationship with God.
Have you ever been driving with a GPS and gone the wrong way? The GPS then tells you that you need to re-route and says to do a U-Turn as soon as possible. Lent is like this for us. It is a beautiful season that allows us to look at the path we are on and review if we are moving closer to God or heading in the wrong direction. We begin the re-routing on Ash Wednesday. These forty days are given to us as a gift. They are God's way of helping us to make U-turns. His voice, unlike my GPS, is gentle and full of compassion.
During Lent, we read an invitation from Jesus to come and make a quiet space in our lives and to spend time with Him. We can hear his voice more clearly in this space as he calls us gently back to Him.

Classes of the Week... 5/6M & KW!
After reading the picture book ‘Where the Wild Things Are’, we took some thinking time to devise our own questions:
After discussing the criteria for open, thought-provoking and philosophical questions, we selected the following question to discuss together:
Was it a dream, imagination or reality?
Over the rest of the term we will ‘think this through’ together. We will do this by welcoming the diversity of each other’s views and use these as the start of a process that involves questioning assumptions, developing opinions with supporting reasons, analysing significant concepts and applying the best reasoning and judgement. In the longer term we aim to build skills and concepts through appropriate follow-up activities, thinking games and orchestration of connections between philosophical discussions, life and the rest of the school curriculum.Congratulations to our Above & Beyond Award recipients this week!
Tobias Loberg, Austin Ratcliff, Daniel Gill, Hunter Metz, Patrick Turner, Jonas Loberg, Sam Ford, Jack Randall, Noah Beardmore, Ruby Cunningham, Willa Reynolds, Anabelle Blake, Charlie Keatley, Hamish McLean, Reuben Antony, Loc Tran, Alexis Swaan, Claire Howard, Millie Smithers, Jacky Zhu, Kyson Swan
